Interview with Susanne Pfleger, Städtische Galerie Wolfsburg

Susanne Pfleger: Astrid, the installation Porschestraße 60 deals with the City of Wolfsburg. What did you observe here and what impressions flow into this work?

Astrid Busch: I developed a work especially for the shop window at Porschestraße 60 that refers in an associative way to the technical developments of the automobile industry in Wolfsburg. For example, we encounter the oversized Golf at the side of the road directly when we arrive in the city. Many areas in Wolfsburg are still used for stationary traffic, but there is already a rethinking about this. The car industry is thus very present, alongside the many interesting architectural highlights of the city, for which I am also developing work in parallel. I have conceived an installation made up of architectural fragments of car parks, car parts, and other technical equipment brought together to form a wall-filling work. Pushed to the edge of abstraction, the individual pictorial elements can hardly be deciphered.

Susanne Pfleger: How do you develop your works?

Astrid Busch: I use my own photographs taken at the respective locations and collect various materials that I consider relevant to a certain theme. For Wolfsburg, for example, in reference to the automobile industry, I concentrated on metallic materials. But I also research archives and antiquarian bookshops, as well as the Internet for visual material. I then build settings in the studio in which the collected materials are arranged in different layers, sprayed, and illuminated. Only then is the photograph taken. My pictures are created by superimposing various materials and images and thus various time levels. The focus of each picture is the overall composition.

Susanne Pfleger: Is this the first time you made an installation for a shop window? What is special about the space of a shop window?

Astrid Busch: I have already exhibited several works in shop windows and thus in the public space of cities. I am currently presenting a work in a comparable spatial situation that cannot be entered and can only be seen from the outside: in the project space Künstlerloge in Ratingen near Düsseldorf. There, in the fifteen-metre-long building, I am presenting a wall-filling collage that refers to the former location of the Calor Emag company, a manufacturer of switchgear devices. In the spring of 2021, I exhibited an installation in the windows of the Heinrich Böll Library in Berlin. This was the home of the temporary art space Korn, curated by Dirk Teschner. With my installation, I referred to the architecture of Roland Korn, who, in addition to well-known buildings such as the House of Travel in Berlin, also designed the residential building that now houses the library. The special thing about a shop window with a large window space is the presence of the work around the clock and the irritation that such an installation can cause in an unusual place where art is not usually expected. I find it very appealing to bring art into everyday life, to confront people with it, and to see the reactions of passers-by.

Susanne Pfleger: Wie entstehen Deine Arbeiten?
