Hetjens – German Ceramic Museum, Düsseldorf, 2020

For the curtain wall of the Hetjens Museum, Astrid Busch developed a site-specific installation that deals with the history of this old fortification, as well as the museum’s porcelain and ceramic collection. From the material she has found and collected, she created photographs that are condensed into spatial pictorial arrangements by extending the motifs into the space through video projections and fabric prints. Fabric works are amply stretched into the space and overlaid with projections. Astrid Busch’s motifs refer to the old harbour basin as an exhibition space, as well as to shipping motifs that can also be found on many of the museum’s ceramic and porcelain objects. The trading and importing of material by ship is a motif that appears repeatedly in the collection and which Astrid Busch has taken up. The motifs she developed, some of which lead to abstraction, are reminiscent of shipping, storms, seas and sails.

Für die Kurtine des Hetjens Museum hat Astrid Busch eine ortsspezifische Installation entwickelt, die sich sowohl mit der Geschichte dieser alten Befestigungsanlage als auch mit der Porzellan- und Keramiksammlung des Museums auseinandersetzt. Aus dem von ihr gefundenen und zusammengetragenen Material entstanden Fotografien, die zu räumlichen Bildarrangements verdichtet werden, indem sie die Motive durch Videoprojektionen und Stoffdrucke in den Raum hinein erweitert. Der Begriff Kurtine ist dem französischen Wort „courtine“, für Vorhang abgeleitet und so bilden Stoffe die Grundlage für die künstlerische Intervention im Hetjens.Es sind Stoffarbeiten üppig in den Raum verspannt und mit Projektionen überlagert. Motivisch hat sich Astrid Busch auf das alte Hafenbecken als Ausstellungsraum und auf Schifffahrtsmotive bezogen, die auch auf vielen Keramik- und Porzellanobjekten des Museums zu finden sind. Der Handel und das Importieren des Materials durch Schiffe ist ein immer wieder in der Sammlung auftauchendes Motiv, das Astrid Busch aufgegriffen hat. Die von ihr entwickelten Motive die teils an die Abstraktion geführt sind, erinnern an Schifffahrt, Sturm, See und Segel.
