Astrid Busch inscribes her own photographic work onto historical images or found objects that she gathers at specific sites. In this way the atmosphere evoked by the traces of the materials’ use or their history are interwoven with current images and projections. Busch’s installations usually incorporate the space around them and consist of objects and photographic images printed on textiles, which simultaneously enter into a dialogue with projected images. In this way and through their incorporation of real space, the moving images generate a unique and almost cinematographic quality. New narrative connections emerge, unfolding within the charged dichotomies between figuration and abstraction, two- and three-dimensionality, stasis and movement – and her audience becomes a part of the occurrence. In sur mer the artist has developed a setting that evokes the impression of a windstorm and recalls dramatically emotional images from 19th-century maritime landscape painting.

Astrid Busch überschreibt historische Bilder oder Fundstücke, die sie an bestimmten Orten sammelt, mit der eigenen fotokünstlerischen Arbeit. So wird die Atmosphäre, welche die Gebrauchsspuren oder die Geschichte der Materialien hervorbringen, mit aktuellen Bildern und Projektionen verwoben.
Buschs zumeist raumbezogene Installationen aus Objekten und fotobedruckten Stoffen treten zugleich mit Bildprojektionen in einen Dialog. Auf diese Weise und indem die bewegten Bilder den realen Raum mit einbeziehen, erzeugen sie eine ganz eigene, fast kinematografische Qualität. Es entstehen neue narrative Zusammenhänge, die sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen Gegenständlichkeit und Abstraktion, Zwei- und Dreidimensionalität, Statik und Bewegung entfalten – und das Publikum ist teil dieses Geschehens. Mit sur mer hat die Künstlerin ein Szenario entwickelt, das den Eindruck von Sturm erzeugt und an dramatische Stimmungsbilder der maritimen Landschaftsmalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts erinnert.
