Astrid Busch uses photographic images to capture the subtleties of an environment’s atmosphere. The starting point of her work are architectural designs and places, which she overwrites with her own photographic images in her installations, works on paper or objects. In this way, she interweaves the character inherent in the places and their stories with her own images and projections. In doing so, Astrid Busch uses the same means that can be found in the respective locations, such as lighting conditions, soundscapes and materialities.
The artist’s works thus describe aesthetic sensory experiences of environments, while at the same time creating new visual worlds themselves.
In the installation „I remember birds and stones“, Astrid Busch addresses the use of space and architecture in the planned city of Mezamor (Armenia). The city was built in 1969 for the workers of the nuclear power plant of the same name. The melancholy mood of Mezamor flows into the composition of the picture. The artist describes her impression: „The air of an emptied past, a lot of broken and broken things. The inhabited buildings seem improvised and are patched up with blue tarpaulins and old materials. The smell of sulphur wafting from the chimneys of the nuclear power plant is perceptible. I refer to the strange silence of the city. In Mezamor, sound is an important element in determining the overall atmosphere. Footsteps on gravel, the occasional car, birds and a few children whose voices mix with the sound of balls being kicked on concrete. I remember birds and stones.“
Mit fotografischen Bildern fängt Astrid Busch die Feinheiten der Atmosphäre einer Umgebung ein. Ausgangspunkt ihrer Werk sind architektonische Entwürfe und Orte, welche sie in ihren Installationen, Papierarbeiten oder Objekten mit eigenen fotografischen Aufnahmen überschreibt. Auf diese Weise verwebt sie den Charakter, der den Orten mit ihren Geschichten innewohnt, mit eigenen Bildern und Projektionen. Dabei bedient sich Astrid Busch jener Mittel, die auch an den jeweiligen Orten zu finden sind, wie Lichtverhältnisse, Klangkulissen und Materialitäten.
Somit beschreiben die Arbeiten der Künstlerin ästhetische Sinneserfahrungen von Umgebungen, während sie zugleich selbst neue Bildwelten kreieren.
In der Installation „I remember birds and stones” greift Astrid Busch den Umgang mit Raum und Architektur in der Planstadt Mezamor (Armenien) auf. Die Stadt wurde 1969 für die Arbeiter des gleichnamigen Atomkraftwerks gebaut. In die Bildkomposition fließt die melancholische Stimmung von Mezamor ein. Die Künstlerin beschreibt ihren Eindruck: „Der Hauch einer entleerten Vergangenheit, viel Abgebrochenes und Kaputtes. Die bewohnten Gebäude wirken improvisiert und sind mit blauen Planen und Altmaterial geflickt. Schwefelgeruch, der aus den Schloten des Atomkraftwerks herüberweht, ist wahrnehmbar. Ich beziehe mich auf die eigenartige Stille der Stadt. Sound bildet in Mezamor ein wichtiges Element zur Bestimmung der Gesamtatmosphäre. Schritte auf Kies, hin und wieder ein Auto, Vögel und einige Kinder, deren Stimmen sich mit dem Kicken von Bällen auf Beton vermischt. I remember birds and stones.“
